The ceramic used in pottery is quite different from the ceramic used in producing ceramic knives. Ceramic used in such production is the hard type. In fact, this type of ceramic is considered as the second hardest material following diamonds. Thus a ceramic knife is one of the sharpest types of knives available and won’t need to be sharpened for a very long time!

Ceramic also has non-porous traits ensuring that the food odors do not transfer from one food product to another. The less porous the material, the lower risk of bacterial infection. These types of knives are also very sanitary. Additionally, their light weight makes them easy to carry around and they will not rust. These knives also feature a comfortable ergonomic grip that allows you to be in control as much as you want.

Hold on a Minute, My Washing Machine is Texting

When I was a kid, I was sure we’d be living like the Jetsons by the time I was 20 years old —by age 25, at least. But alas, I still don’t have my flying electric car or my robot maid! In all fairness, I could have a robot maid, if I made enough money to buy one; but that may take a few more years. That’s why the new generation of “smart” home appliances puts a smile on my face.

Can’t cook with a worth a dime? Don’t worry, your kitchen oven will teach you. Nervous you’ll have a stroke of genius you must share with your friends while you’re putting away your groceries? Never fear! You can tweet it right from your refrigerator door. These are just some of the ideas that debuted at the 2011 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada. Companies like LG, Panasonic and Samsung are determined to bring interconnectivity to all of your daily activities, from flipping pancakes to scrubbing out stains; there’s even a scale, from French technology company Withings, that sends your updated weight to your smart phone via Wi-Fi (now that might be going too far).

Samsung’s smart refrigerator connects to the Internet, and has a digital display with touch screen technology located conveniently above the ice dispenser. Users can read the daily news, make grocery-shopping lists, and even download and listen to music, all while getting their kitchen chores done for the day.

If that isn’t enough fun for you, maybe you’re the type of person who need a washing machine that actually texts you when your clothes are ready, or an oven that messages you when the lasagna is almost done! Now some of you are saying to yourselves: “Whoa… Slow down. I don’t need MORE electronic annoyances!” It’s understandable you may be apprehensive of yet another gadget buzzing in your ear, telling you its time to do something.

But just imagine being able to manage your time at home more efficiently, without even thinking about it? Go ahead and run outside to play with the kids. Enjoy yourself! There’d be no need to set your stopwatch because dinner’s cooking or the dryer’s running; your appliances will let you know when it’s time to come in.

Not only are these new smart appliances making life easier and more convenient—or striving to do so with ultra-modern concepts—they’re a blast to use. LG, who unveiled they’re line of smart appliances with THINQ technology at the 2011 CES, envisions a home in which all appliances communicate with one another, and to you, to operate the most competent household yet. Internet-connected appliances might someday be able to alert you to food that might be expiring in your fridge, or how to achieve the most energy efficiency with your heating and cooling system.

So how about a refrigerator that knows when you’re craving ice cream, or maybe some midnight pizza, and serves it up? Could it at least send out for it? Who knows—the way many big companies are dreaming these days, these seemingly cockamamie ideas may just become reality. After all, you can order anything on the Internet these days!

We’ll be watching these developments closely and working with our manufacturing partners to bring them to you as soon as possible!

Energy Efficient Lighting – LED Lamps

The upcoming carbon tax is going to lead to increased energy costs, which is meant to spur the uptake of more energy efficient appliances and habits. At Avancer we are always looking for new and innovative solutions to increase our efficiency. Right now we are investigating the launch of a new range of energy efficient lamps.

In the last few years we have already witnessed a lot of changes in this area. The government has banned incandescent light bulbs and this has spurred the uptake of compact fluorescent lamps (CFL). Compared to Incandescent lamps, CFL lasts longer (6,000 hours vs. 750 hours) and consume less electricity to generate the same amount of light.

LED Lighting is the newest technology to hit the market and is promising even longer lamp lifetimes (30,000 to 50,000 hours) and more efficient electricity usage . At the moment the price of LED Lighting technology is prohibitive for most users, with the initial outlay taking several years to recoup in lower energy costs.

Our aim is to bring to market a range of energy efficient LED Lamps at a price low enough to recoup their initial investment in less than a year, whilst maintaining the same brightness and warmth of conventional lamps.

These LED light bulbs would work with existing light fixtures and plugs so the only thing you need to do is swap the bulb.

With the possibility of a carbon tax now is the perfect time to reduce our electricity usage. We would love to hear your thoughts on this and in particular what price you would pay for these new lights.

Cheers,
Shervin

How do you make Espresso Coffee?

One of the questions we get asked a lot is how do you actually use your new Stovetop Espresso Maker to make a great tasting freshly brewed Espresso Coffee.

Espresso Maker parts

A Stovetop Espresso Maker is made up of three parts pictured above.

1)  Remove the Top part of the percolator and take the Filter Funnel out of the Bottom part.

2) Fill the Bottom part of the Espresso Coffee Maker with cold water. The water should come to just under the yellow safety valve. Make sure you do not fill past this point. The amount of water you need depends on the size of the Espresso Maker. If you have a 9 Cup Percolator you need to make 9 shots of Espresso.

3) Use your favorite blend of fine ground Espresso Coffee and fill the filter funnel. For the best coffee taste buy your own beans and grind the coffee until it is a fine powder.

4) Place the filter back into the bottom part of the percolator and screw the top back on firmly.

5) Place the espresso maker on the stove and heat on medium to high heat. You should hear a gurgling or steam spray which means that the fresh espresso is being forced into the top part. After a few minutes you should hear the gurgling subside, at this point you can gently lift the lid. The espresso is ready when the top compartment is full.

6) Remove from the stove and be careful of the hot surface. Serve and enjoy!
